Millimeter Wave User Equipment Beamforming Concept Compliant With 3GPP Specifications

Abstract

A beamforming concept for mobile handsets operating in the millimeter wave frequency range is proposed to comply with specifications defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). By integrating antenna elements
directly into the smartphone corner, realized on a metallized injection molded plastic carrier, a large spherical coverage is achieved. To maximize antenna gains, calculation methods for chassis conformal arrays are derived and applied. Simultaneous excitation of two elements is suggested for operation to maximize
the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the equivalent isotropic radiated power (EIRP). Compliance of the proposed chassis conformal array concept with 3GPP specifications is shown by evaluation of the spherical coverage.
